Global Education

Vision & Mission

The vision of the North Carolina State Board of Education is that every public school student in North Carolina will be empowered to accept academic challenges, prepared to pursue their chosen path after graduating high school, and encouraged to become lifelong learners who will engage in a globally-collaborative society.

Global Education is the means to ensuring that our North Carolina public school graduates are globally engaged and productive citizens.

Please read the details below about the ongoing work to sustain and expand Global Education in North Carolina.

Overview of Global Education in North Carolina

In 2011, the North Carolina State Board of Education (SBE) formed the Global Education Task Force to assess the state's efforts to produce "globally competitive" graduates. This group gathered evidence from international, national, state, and local experts on global education and competitiveness, and they asked for recommendations from leaders in business and industry, higher education, the military, public schools, and a variety of organizations. Using this information, the Global Education Task Force noted six major findings and outlined five commitments to ensure every public school student graduates fully prepared for the world in which he or she will live, work, and contribute.

In 2013, the SBE received the final report of the State Board of Education's Task Force on Global Education, "Preparing Students for the World" (January 2013). Click to see the executive summary or the full report. Both are also posted below under Associated Files.

For five years, the action items from the commitments in the final report were implemented. A number of Global Education initiatives were created and established so that they could be maintained and continue to grow.

In 2018, a presentation was made at the October State Board of Education Meeting about all that had been accomplished with putting the Global Education commitments into practice.

Moving into the Future with Global Education

The NCDPI Global Education Steering Committee now leads the state's efforts to ensure every public school student graduates ready to live, work, and contribute in an interconnected world. Going forward, the SBE policies and state initiatives will sustain the ongoing Global Education work, which will provide statewide infrastructure to support and guide a common vision for global education in North Carolina's public schools.
